Google deepens its push into Generative AI with a feature to create text for Gmail and Docs

Google is deepening its initiatives in the generative artificial intelligence space, as it introduced features that will allow users to create text in Gmail and Docs using its AI technology.

Google is testing the AI products and making these products accessible to a finite number of users of Workspace, which include Gmail and Google’s productivity tools.

Johanna Voolich Wright, vice president of product for Google Workspace, wrote, “Whether you’re a busy HR professional who needs to create customized job descriptions, or a parent drafting the invitation for your child’s pirate-themed birthday party, Workspace saves you the time and effort of writing that first version. Simply type a topic you’d like to write about and a draft will instantly be ready for you.”

Generative Artificial Intelligence has been a topic of discussion in tech this year after OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT in November last year.

With Google’s test, a user can type in an email text box something like ‘draft an email to the team’. The application will respond with a three-paragraph thank-you note which the user can edit, elaborate, or create a bulleted list. The user can also ask for rewriting.

Google has 3 billion users of Workspace which include consumers and companies.

Google’s top competitor in the market is Microsoft 365. Microsoft will also discuss AI and productivity software at a virtual event on LinkedIn later this week.

Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said, “The Company started testing a service for building corporate chatbots. The cloud business includes Workspace. We’re so excited by the potential of generative AI and the opportunities it will unlock. The technology will help people express themselves, enable developers with new applications, and change how businesses constituents.”
